I say that intentionally.
I am not a lesbian. Not bi. Not straight. Not pan. Not gay.
I am queer. Intentionally. I intentionally use this term although others may apply.
Because being queer is political. It is fucking shit up. It is reconstructing broken elements. It is loving multiple sexes and genders and expressions, alone and simultaneously.
When I fuck my partner it is queer. When I am fucked it is queer. When I fuck myself it is queer.
My dress is just as queer as my combat boots.
I am always queer. Intentionally.

Connie Laalo’s Ryerson thesis project, Beyond Lipstick, explores queer femme identity. I’m in it.
“Beyond Lipstick is a participatory online exploration of queer femme identity through the use of self-portraiture. This project seeks to examine queer femme identity as it is expressed and communicated through dress and appearance. The work stems from the assumption that femme is a transgressive and subversive identity to both heteronormative and homonormative conventions. Visibility and representation matter: too often female masculinity is privileged as an authentic expression of queer identity.”
Alright folks, here it is, at last, a digitally bound version of all the major content pages of the GENDER book. Now is the time for feedback from you, our amazing community.
Some of the changes to come are pretty obvious, like I mistyped “neutral” on that one page and some of the speech bubbles are still blank. Even if they’re obvious and we probably already know, go ahead and mention it anyway, suggest what you’d put in those empty bubbles! If nothing else, keep us honest in our great typo search.
Please keep your comments on positive (or at the very least, constructive) notes. Remember, we’re just humans like you doing the best we can. Thanks!
